#53: The Boiling Frog | La grenouille ébouillantée (En/Fr)

If you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will leap out right away, startled by the sudden heat. But if you gently place the frog in cool, comfortable water and slowly heat it, the frog will stay put.

At first, the water feels nice and warm, like a cozy bath. The frog doesn’t feel any danger, so it relaxes. As the water gets hotter and hotter, the frog starts to feel uncomfortable.

“It’s a little warm,” it thinks, “but I’ll be fine.”

But the heat keeps rising. By the time the frog realizes the danger, it’s too late to jump out.

Si vous jetez une grenouille dans une casserole d’eau bouillante, elle bondira immédiatement, surprise par la chaleur soudaine. Mais si vous la placez doucement dans de l’eau fraîche et confortable et que vous la faites chauffer lentement, elle restera en place.

Au début, l’eau est agréable et chaude, comme dans un bain douillet. La grenouille ne ressent aucun danger, alors elle se détend. À mesure que l’eau devient de plus en plus chaude, la grenouille commence à se sentir mal à l’aise.

« C’est un peu chaud », pense-t-elle, « mais ça ira ».

Mais la chaleur ne cesse de monter. Au moment où la grenouille se rend compte du danger, il est trop tard pour sauter.
