On a scorching day in a sun-drenched oasis, the grand sultan entered Nasredine Hodja’s fan shop.
He inquired about the prices of four elegantly crafted fans.
Hodja smiled and replied,
“The first fan is 10 dinars, the second 5 dinars, the third 2 dinars, and the last, just 1 dinar.”
The sultan chose the modest 1 dinar fan, confident it would cool him. Moments later, he re-entered the shop, fuming,
“Hodja! This fan is broken!”
He shook it furiously in front of his face.
Remaining calm, Hodja asked,
“Your Majesty, could you show me how you’re using it?”
The sultan waved the fan from left to right.
Amused, Hodja replied,
“For the 1 dinar fan, you must keep your hand still and sway your head left and right.”

Par une journée torride dans une oasis baignée de soleil, le grand sultan entra dans la boutique d’éventails de Nasredine Hodja.
Il s’enquit du prix de quatre éventails élégamment confectionnés.
Hodja sourit et répondit :
“Le premier éventail coûte 10 dinars, le deuxième 5 dinars, le troisième 2 dinars et le dernier, 1 dinar seulement.”
Le sultan choisit le modeste éventail à 1 dinar, convaincu qu’il le rafraîchirait.
Quelques instants plus tard, il rentra dans la boutique, furieux :
“Hodja ! Cet éventail est cassé !”
Il le secoua furieusement devant son visage.
Restant calme, Hodja demanda :
“Votre Majesté, pourriez-vous me montrer comment vous l’utilisez ?”
Le sultan agita l’éventail de gauche à droite.
Amusé, Hodja répondit :
« Pour l’éventail à 1 dinar, vous devez garder votre main immobile et balancer votre tête de gauche à droite.»
